Fall Trail Running

By Susan Barth

Now that summer is over and fall is settling in, it is time to plan for some good group trail runs. All paces are welcome. The more people that come, the more group options we have. So recruit a friend and come enjoy a day on a beautiful trail with friends. As it gets closer to each date something will be posted on the message board to organize carpools and post-run eating. So, plan ahead and get these trail runs on your calendar.

Thursday, November 24th (Thanksgiving): Tryon Creek State Park
A Thanksgiving tradition! Meet at 8:30am at the Nature Center off Terwilliger. The park has many miles of trail loops, so you can go as long or short (and fast or slow) as you feel. If you are staying in town for Thanksgiving dinner, there isn’t a better way to prepare for a massive turkey (or tofurkey, if you are so inclined) feast.

Saturday, November 26th: Silver Falls State Park
Explore some of Oregon’s best waterfalls (you even run behind a couple of them) on the Trail of Ten Falls. Meet at 8:00am at the Tualatin Park and Ride near Bridgeport Shopping Center; located on Lower Boones Ferry Road, just west of I-5.

Sunday, December 18th: Milo McIver State Park
There are some great trails that wind their way through this large park along the Clackamas River near Estacada. Meet at 8:00am at the Clackamas Fred Meyer. It is near Elmer’s off I-205 at the Hwy 212/224 exit.

December 31st: Purge and Splurge
The TRL message board will be bursting with details about this as we get closer to New Year’s Eve, but there are typically several distances offered – 10, 15, 20 and 30 miles. For all options, everyone meets at the finishing location for their distance and then carpools to the start – at mile 30.2 of Wildwood Trail on Newberry Road. The 30 mile group meets at the veterans memorial near the zoo, the 20 mile group meets at 53rd Ave, the 15 mile group meets at lower Saltzman (off Hwy 43), and the 10 mile group meets at the top of Gas Line. This will likely be a big year for P&S, since New Year’s Eve is a Saturday. So plan to end the year with an epic run in the morning, eat some food, take a nap, and then party all night long… well, even if you’re too tired to do more than just the first few items, this is a great way to end 2011.

  1. This is such a great idea! I defintiely need something to motivate me to fight the post-stuffing laziness. If anyone is looking to set up a carpool, I would recommend Amovens.com. They’re hosting a giveaway for $25 giftcards for people who carpool during Thanksgiving week! Check it out :]
