The Flat Half is almost upon us! This popular Independence Day event has become a fixture on the Portland running calendar, along with its companion events, the Flat Marathon and the Firecracker 5k. For several years the Flat Half has been part of the TRL Summer Series, and once again it should prove to be a pivotal race in the 2012 schedule.
As always, there are two ways that Lizards can participate (three actually, if you are willing to combine the first two):
1. Sign up for the race and earn Summer Series points (for the Half only).
2. Volunteer at the ever-popular and extremely fun Red Lizard Aid Station.
3. Do both! Runners can easily head over to the aid station after racing to join the festivities and offer water and encouragement to fellow runners.
The Flat Half on the 4th of July is always a great way to spend the holiday, and there’s nothing better than putting in a good effort in the race, then relaxing with your fellow club-mates by helping out at the aid station. The enthusiasm is contagious, and your fellow runners really appreciate the support as they pass the bright red and white tent and soak up the atmosphere TRL never fails to provide.
Of course, you don’t need to run the race. Volunteering at the aid station alone is blast in itself. But whether you’re racing, volunteering, or both, the 4th of July on Sauvie Island is a great day to be a Lizard!
