2013 TRL Summer Series: Don’t miss it!

Show your colors and hit the pavement (and grass, dirt, and trail) in the 2013 TRL Summer Series!

Now that spring has sprung, it’s time for Lizards to lace up their racing shoes and get ready for the annual TRL Summer Series, eight races of various distances and terrain designed to test your mettle and get your competitive juices flowing!

You can run as few or as many of the races as you want, but your best five scores will count toward the overall standings. Everyone who finishes a race earns points, with the top male and female Lizards netting 100, and la lanterne rouge (pardon my French) garnering 20. At the end of the series, the top 10 men and women will earn a coveted Summer Series souvenir of some sort (how’s that for specific?)

Here is the schedule for the 2013 TRL Summer Series:

May 4th (Sat.) – ORRC Hagg Lake 10.5 miler
This scenic and well-established race takes runners on a hilly circuit on the road around the namesake lake between Forest Grove and Gaston. Now that Lake Oswego’s venerable Lake Run has been downgraded to a mere out-and-back 10k, the Hagg Lake Run becomes the last remaining lake-circling, lung-busting, quad-pounding challenge in the greater Portland area. Get ready for a fun road trip to the wilds of Washington County!

May 18th (Sat.) – Carson to Stevenson Ridge 15k
This point-to-point race on the Washington side of the Gorge offers a scenic combination of road and trail, with a good dose of hills. It’s only $10, and a great excuse for a reptilian convey and a potential post-race celebration at the local brew pub.

May 27th (Mon. Memorial Day) – ORRC Up The Lazy River 10k
A popular holdover from the 2012 Summer Series, UTLR offers runners a nice tour of leafy West Linn and Lake Oswego neighborhoods, with the promise of pineapple and other welcome refreshments at the finish.

June 15th (Sat.) The Backyard Half
Lizards have a love/hate relationship with this grueling trail race along the steep, forested slopes of the Gorge outside of White Salmon, Washington. One of the more notorious, yet popular, entries on the 2012 schedule, this race will test your lungs, legs, and survival skills. The views along the course make it all worthwhile (if you haven’t blacked out from the climb by then!)

June 21st (Fri. evening) – ORRC Summer Solstice Sundowner 5k
A two-loop tour of the quiet campus of Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, on paved paths and bark dust/gravel trail, with popsicles at the finish. A perfect way to welcome summer.

July 14th (Sun.) – Gabriel Park 5k
For Lizards like me, who have missed the Gabriel Park stop on the Stumptown Cross Country circuit the past couple years, this is a chance to revisit a favorite venue. And, as part of the Portland Parks & Recreation $5 Series, the price is right!

July 21st (Sun.) McCubbins Gulch Scramble
Because it just wouldn’t be the Summer Series without a chance to impale yourself on a log, lose an eye in the thick undergrowth, or get stepped on while crossing a frigid, boulder-strewn mountain stream! No, really, Scrambles are fun… Right?

August 1st (Thurs. evening) – ORRC Dual Duel 2-person track relay (5 miles each, alternating laps, 10 miles total)
This year, the Summer Series ends with a relay! Strategy will come into play when picking a partner. There’s only one rule: To assure parity, only one teammate can be in the top half of the standings going in. Mixed teams are welcome and could stir up both the men’s and women’s rankings. A fun and dramatic finale is guaranteed! After the race, stick around for snacks and celebration in the infield at the picturesque Catlin Gabel School track.
