Portland Marathon Pacers Needed

The first weekend in October holds a special day for Portlanders and Team Red Lizard. Sunday, October 4, 2015 is the Portland Marathon, and that means TRL will be all over the place – organizing and staffing the aid station at Mile 24, as well as providing pace teams for event participants trying to run 15 different goal times. If someone plans to run between 3:00 and 5:00 hours at the Portland Marathon, they will no doubt see one of the little red lizard signs somewhere along the way to the finish line.

Being a pacer is a rewarding experience, and I would encourage anyone who is fit enough to hold a steady pace for a half marathon to take a look at the pace groups still needed and sign up. There are still plenty of faster and slower time slots still available, so sign up today so that TRL’s Pacing Director, Tim Swietlik, can worry about all of the other details that go along with providing pace teams for the marathon.

If you haven’t ever volunteered to be a pacer, here’s the scoop. We look for 4 people to help out with each goal time. Two people will pace the first half and then hand off to 2 other people who will take the group through the finish line. The goal is to get the group across the line as close as possible to the target finish time while running even effort splits – we have terrain adjusted splits for the Portland Marathon course. That means some of the flat or downhill miles may be a little faster than what even splits might have someone run, but that allows the pace team to keep the effort consistent for harder miles, like the climb up to the St Johns Bridge at mile 17.

After a decade of being a pace team leader, I still think this is one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences we runners have a chance to provide. If you are interested in helping out or want more info, check out this thread on the message board or email Tim at imarunr@comcast.net

  1. We’re good on pacers! Over 60 Lizards are set to pace at the 2015 Portland Marathon. Go get ‘em reptiles!
