Stumptown Splits Things Up

The 2015 Stumptown Cross series is “off to the races” with 2 events done and 3 to go. And based on the weather forecast, it looks like fall will definitely be in the air this weekend. Perhaps I should re-phrase that… rain will be falling, and bits of mud and grass will be flying in the air this weekend!

For the final 3 races – which includes Gabriel Park on Oct 31, Pier Park on Nov 7 and Fernhill Park on Nov 21 – the men and women will run separately.

The timing on the final 3 races will be the same, with the women kicking things off at 9:00am, followed by the men running at 9:45am. We have always had split fields for the “championship” races, where men and women race different distances, but we will be splitting the Gabriel Park race, even though both men and women will be racing the same 4 mile course. Splitting the fields should decrease congestion on the course, while also allowing athletes to spectate during the other race during warm up or cool down.

As the series has continued to grow over the years, it seems like a logical move to make, even for the early season races where men and women race the same distance. We will see how it goes at Gabriel Park this weekend and see what that might mean for next year.

See you out at the next Stumptown race!
