Bend, Oregon will be hosting the USATF Cross Country National Championships on Saturday, February 4, 2017 and there will be a whole lot of Red Lizards representing in the races. Twenty five men and women are making the trip to Central Oregon this weekend to compete in several different races.
At 10am, the masters women get things underway with a 6k race – Lizard ladies will be fielding full teams in the 40+, 50+ and 60+ age divisions. The 40+ masters women squad includes Sonya Wilkerson, Angela Lindbo, Jen Seibel, and Janne Heinonen. The 50+ team consists of Susan Hay, Colleen Rocerto, Kate MacTavish, and Betsy Miller. And the 60+ women will be represented by Suzanne Ray, Joanna Harper, and Jeanette Groesz.
At 10:45, the masters men take to the currently snow-covered River’s Edge Golf Course (although hopefully citizens will have a path shoveled and the masters ladies will have it packed down by then). The Lizards will have a single men’s team representing in the 40+ division, consisting of Joe Dudman, Darren Moore, Adam Divergilio, Steven Short, Torrey Lindbo and Peter Jensen.
At 1:30pm, the open women will be racing 10k. Theresa Fuchs, Amanda Rice, Janet Ruttenberg, Corinna Jackson, Lana Ferris, and Laura Nitti will be representing TRL in that event. And then Ben Flaata will be the lone TRL representative in the open mens 10k at 2:20pm.
No matter how the results turn out for each event, it should be a fun weekend of racing and hanging out with the Lizards in Bend. This is USATF nationals, so there will most certainly be some fast competition in the open races. This is the event where US athletes qualify to make the team to represent the USA at the cross country world championships. While I’m not sure any of our athletes will be making the world team, I am guessing our men and women will represent Portland and our club as best they can.
Good luck to everyone competing next weekend!
