2019 Summer Series

While the long warm days of summer are still a ways off, it’s never too early to start planning for races and events to fill your calendar with. To help you determine which races might be good to work into your spring and summer plans, TRL has selected 10 great events that will make up this year’s Summer Series.

Not sure what the Summer Series is? This is our intra-club competition we hold every summer. We keep track of how members place compared to one another, and also track how many races each member participates in – you get credit for each event, and at the end of the summer, we distribute some prizes based on how everyone does. The exact scoring method is below, but the goal of the series is as much to get Lizards out to the same events to enjoy some competition mixed with camaraderie. And with some discounts on many of the events in the series, there is also a nice benefit for TRL members.

Most of the details on discounts and each of the following events will be posted in the Red Lizard Running Community page on facebook – so add these to your calendar, and then be sure follow our facebook page to ensure you know the when, where and what for each of these races:

April 27 – Willamette Mission Trail 10k
May 11 – Lake Run 10k
June 1 – Dogwood Dash 5k
June 15 – Backyard Half Marathon
June 22 – Taste of Parkrose 5k
June 29 – Rose City Mile
July 7 – Outdoor Sunday Evening 5k
July 20 – Bowerman 5k
August 17 – Bear Creek 10k
Strava Segment (1 mile segment on the Springwater Trail*)

Race directors have generously offered discounts for TRL members. Discount info will be posted in the Team Red Lizard Members group on Facebook, so check there for details. And if you are a TRL member that doesn’t yet belong to that group, please request to join and we will give you access to all of the info shared there.

*Strava Segment will be created and posted soon. Plan is to have it be from the mile 2.5 mile marker to the 3.5 mile marker heading south. This segment is a part of the normal Wednesday night Pub Run route, so could be something run during that, or any run that incorporates that segment by a TRL member during 2019 (Jan 1 through the final Summer Series race on August 17).

Summer Series scoring is based on participation and rank.

The “rank” is based on how well male and female Lizards place against one another at each event—scores are awarded where the first finishing Lizard gets 100 point, the final Lizard gets 20, and the point in between are divided by however many show up for that race. The male and female Lizards with the top scores based on rank will fill the first 5 slots of the 10 who will receive fame and fortune (or at least first pick of the cool prizes we are amassing).

For the rank list, we count the best 5 of 10 races for each person to calculate their series standings. In addition to the top 5 ranked male and female Lizard, we will also be putting the top 5 male and female participants into the running for those prizes. So even if you were the final Lizard in all 10 events, the fact that you did all of the events almost assures you will be among the top 5 participants. So, go fast or go often—either approach might help you score one of the amazing prizes we will hand out at the Summer Sizzler to be held in September.

  1. I just noticed that the Outdoor Sunday Evening 5k is actually on July 14, not July 7 this year.
