// Director of Group Runs – Mark Mochon

Though I never ran competitively in high school or college I am currently pushing close to 40 years as a runner.  About 35 of those competitively. Though I’ve slowed down (a LOT )over the past few years I still enjoy lacing up the shoes and going for a run most every day.  I can still remember the first time I did any type of a run that I wasn’t forced into by a PE teacher.  I was in my early 20’s and was hiking – in cowboy boots and Levi jeans no less – through a natural area in southern California.  Way in the distance I could see my car and thought “I wonder if I could run the whole way back?”.  Surprisingly I made it.  It was only about a mile and it about killed me but I felt exhilarated at the accomplishment.  And so it began.

Fast forward about 15 years later and I found myself in a running store in Lake Oswego chatting with the guy behind the counter who was trying to get some people to meet for weekend runs.  Heck yeah, I said.  Running is a lonely sport if you do it regularly and running with a group or at least a couple of other people would be fun.  That was the early beginning of Team Red Lizard.  I joined this new running club and was given a membership card – It was such a small club back then that the name that was written on my card was just “Mark”.  I was member # 7.  I still carry that card with me in my wallet today.

I can’t tell you how many great and fun memories have developed as a result of this club.  Trail runs, races, relay teams, group runs, volunteer events, parties and friendships.  Some of my best friends today were met through this club.

Being asked to become the Director of Group Runs for the Red Lizards is an honor.  It is so rewarding to see people having a good time meeting other people that share the same interest.

All the group runs are free and do not require club membership.  If you haven’t already, come on out and give us a try.  We’ll do our best to have you leave with a smile on your face and a longing to become more involved with this great group.
